How To Spend It

Creative Direction—Editorial

2019-present

A complete redesign of the Financial Times’  global luxury supplement.

Working closely with new How To Spend It editor Jo Ellison, the aim was to develop an elegant and modern refresh of the magazine, reflecting the changing face of luxury and the editor’s more inclusive and expansive vision for the 25-year old magazine.
Underpinned by a solid new structure moving from shorter trend stories to longer photography-led features, the new How To Spend It champions a fresh roster of image-makers, a contemporary typographic language and elegant editorial design that makes full use of its large-format pages.
Successfully launched in February 2020, the new look was met with critical acclaim and grew How To Spend It’s readership by enticing a broader audience without alienating its loyal readers.

ES Magazine

Art Direction—Editorial

2016-2017

A total refresh of London’s leading weekly fashion & culture supplement magazine.

In early 2016, I was brought in as the new art director of Evening Standard Magazine to head up its complete redesign—alongside consultant David Lane—and revamp the magazine’s look.
The aim was to bring the aesthetics of monthly glossies within the language of weeklies, with a more streamlined, fashion-forward art direction, new brand-identity graphics, sophistication in design and typography, and, generally, a timeless look that nevertheless reflects modern tastes within the current cultural & design climate.
The challenge lied in delivering high-quality shoots and visuals week on week with limited budgets and tight deadlines, achieved by coming up with fresh, intuitive solutions to image-making and commissioning upcoming talent alongside more established names.

Art Direction—Editorial

2011-2016

Five years in the art department of the world’s biggest fashion magazine.

Joining in 2011 as art editor before moving up to an Associate Art Director position, I was involved in art direction and design across all sections of the monthly magazine—my time within the art team also included working closely with then creative director Jaime Perlman on two highly-successful Vogue redesigns.
As head of the Vogue Arts section, I commissioned portrait and still life photography, with on-set support and supervision on shoots with artists such as Coco Capitan, Ben Toms, Linda Brownlee and John Spinks.
